REBUILT: How becoming part computer made me more human, a book by Michael Chorost appears to be an excellently written account of becoming the recipient of a cochlear implant (not to mention what life is like for one who is deaf/hard-of-hearing). A download is available of the first chapter, giving a glimpse of Chorost's dry wit and intelligence (dry & otherwise). Chorost makes references to cyborgs, cybernetics, the Six Million Dollar Man, and Kubrick's HAL.
i highly recommend reading this first chapter and then get the book for yourself.
